Emeco Chairs: Iconic Seating Solution

Sustainable Seating Solutions

In 1944, Emeco was founded by Wilton Carlyle Dinges in Hanover, Pennsylvania. Emeco stands for Electric Machine and Equipment Co., and under this brand Dinges focussed on the skills of local craftsmen. During the Second World War, the US government gave Emeco the order to design chairs that were lightweight but stable, water and salt air resistant and therefore suitable for military purposes (submarines).

Wilton C. Dinge’s choice for the material that met all of these properties was made quickly: The chairs were to be made of aluminium. And the name was soon found: Emeco gave the chair the number 1006, the 1006 Navy Chair was born.

Thanks to the material used in the Navy Chair by Emeco, the chair weighed only 3.2 kilograms. In 2009 Emeco collaborated with Coca Cola and created the 111 Navy Chair . Based on the aluminium original design, the 111 Navy Chairs was created in plastic, recycling 111 Coca Cola bottles. 1006 Navy Chair and 111 Navy Chair are both now an iconic piece of sustainable design with a great story behind.

Quality is never an accident

All Emeco products are made by hand. Machines only support the work process, polishing a chair, for example, is done entirely by hand. Emeco also uses up to 80 percent recycled aluminium for the production of the Navy Chair.

With the Emeco chairs you can add an extra dose of industrial chic, and not only to your home. The chairs are perfect for residential projects as well as fitting out public areas such as cafeterias, cafes or restaurants. The Broom Bar stools by Philippe Starck for Emeco in particular have been very popular as a hospitality seating solution.
